Turner, Austin Augustus (American photographer and photolithographer, ca. 1831 - 1866)

Note: Died 19 September 1866. In 1852, Turner was employed as an operator at the photography gallery of B.F. Campbell in Boston, Massachusetts. He moved to New York City, New York before 1854 and was employed at Mathew B. Brady's photography gallery. In 1855, Turner joined the studio of Mr. Minnis in Lynchburg, Virginia. He travelled to Paris, France ca. 1856. In 1856, Turner opened a studio and gallery in Boston, Massachusetts with Snelling and James A. Cutting. By 1858, Turner was producing photolithographs. In 1860 Turner moved to New York City and established a photolithograph business. He was in partnership with D. Appleton & Co. until 1864. During this time he was also the chief photographer for Appleton's cartes-de-visite business. In 1860, Turner published the book "Villas on the Hudson" with photolithographs of the houses along the Hudson River Valley, New York. This was the earliest photomechanically produced book in the United States. In 1864, Turner moved to New Orleans, Louisiana where he was in partnership with Samuel Anderson until 1865.
