Record Type: Person
Master of the Berlin Sketchbook (painter and draftsman, active 2nd quarter of the 16th century in the northern Netherlands and Germany)

Note: This anonymous master takes his name from an unpublished sketchbook of 48 folios which can be dated ca. 1523-1526 on the basis of inscriptions and sketches recording two dated paintings by Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen, for whom the Master probably worked as an assistant. The idiosyncratic style of the Master of the Berlin Sketchbook is characterized by nervous lines and delicate, precise forms. Figures have egg-shaped faces, tilted heads, tiny features, fluttering hands, and ethereal bodies. Other paintings attributed to him are an Annunciation, a Portrait of a Scholar, and three panels that once formed a tiny Marian triptych: the Coronation of the Virgin, which would have been flanked by the Virgin on the Crescent Moon and the Virgin and Child with St. Anne. All the works attributed to him are painted on pine, a type of wood popular in Germany but never used in the Netherlands in the early 16th century. This suggests that the Master returned or moved to a German city after leaving Jacob's studio. His paintings, which span the transition from a Late Gothic aesthetic to early Mannerism, helps to establish connections between the Netherlands and Germany in the 16th century.
