Itier, Jules (French daguerreotypist and photographer, 1802-1877)

Note: Gimon gives date of birth as 8 April 1802 and date of death as 13 October 1877; LCNAF gives year of birth as ca. 1805. Itier began working for the French Customs Service in 1819. He was an amateur photographer who learned the daguerreotype process ca. 1840. In 1843, Itier was appointed chief of the French commercial mission to China, the Indies and the Pacific Islands, which he visited and photographed in 1844. In late 1845 and early 1846, Itier visited Cairo, Egypt and travelled up the Nile River to the island of Philae. In 1846, Itier became the "French Inspector" at Marseille, and in 1848, he became the Director of Customs at Montpellier, France, where he practised photography until ca. 1859.
