In the mid-19th century, two villages had grown up here: Carthage and Franklin Mills. It was eventually united under the name of "Franklin MIlls." After considering the name "Rockton," it was finally renamed "Kent" in 1864 to honor Marvin Kent, promoter of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad.
