Note: The city of Reutlingen is situated on the Echaz River in the Swabian Alps south of Stuttgart in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. Founded by Frederick II in the 13th century, it was an important medieval fortified center. It was the first city in Swabia to join the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. It became part of Württemberg in 1802. It is noted for its medieval architecture, including many high-gabled, half-timbered houses, and some Gothic structures, such as the Marienkirche begun in 1247. The modern city's major economic activities are leather tanning and textile manufacture. The 2004 estimated population was 112,200. |
