Note: The city of Kempten is located in the AllGäu region of the Swabia district of Bavaria on the Iller River. Originally a Celtic settlement, the site later became a thriving Roman colony. A Benedictine abbey was established on the site from 8th century. There was conflict between it and the town, which was a free imperial city from 1289 and became Protestant from 1525. A new town arose around the abbey and was chartered in the 18th century. The towns were taken by Bavaria in 1803 and united into one town in 1818. The city today still retains much of its Renaissance and Baroque architecture, including the stone town hall, 1474, and the Church of St. Mang, 1426, restored. Kempten is the communications, economic, and cultural hub of the Allgäu region, and has textile, paper, and engineering industries and breweries. The 2004 estimated population was 61,800.
