Tbilisi passed to the Mongols in 1234, and was pillaged by Timur in 1386, then captured several times by the Turks. In 1795, Tbilisi was burned by the Persians. From 1801, it was under Russian rule 1801, and was connected by rail to Poti by 1872. In 1921, it became the capital of the Georgian Republic. Georgia declared independence in 1991.
