Note: The town of Opava is located northwest of Ostrava on the Opava River in the region of Severomoravsk√Ĺ in the northeastern Czech Republic near the border with Poland. It was first mentioned in 1195, by the 14th century it was a principate under the king of Bohemia, and eventually became the capital of Austrian Silesia. It was the site of the signing of the Congress of Troppau between Prussian, Austrian, and Russian delegates after the Napoleonic Wars in 1820. It was damaged during World War II and lost much of its historic architecture. Surviving examples include the town-hall tower in the Upper Square; the restored 17th-century Church of St. George in the Lower Square, and the Gothic Church of St. Mary that had been built by Teutonic Knights.
