Note: Located on the River Calder, Wakefield has been a center for the wool trade since the 14th century. In 1460, Richard, Duke of York, was captured and beheaded here by Lancastrians during the War of Roses. The famous Towneley and Wakefield mystery plays were performed here from ca. 1450. Modern industries include coal mining, textiles, brewing, and engineering. Its cathedral has Norman traces and at 247 feet features the tallest crocketed spire in Yorkshire.
