Note: The castle here dates from the 11th century and it was held by the Cliffords for 300 years. 'Butcher' Clifford was a leading Lancastrian in the War of the Roses; his son, the Shepherd Lord, led the men of Craven Flodden in 1513. During the Civil War the castle was besieged for three years. Skipton is now a market town.
