Note: Oviedo is situated in northern Spain and lies 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Gijón. Oviedo is one of only a few medieval towns in Spain not to be conquered by Moors during the Middle Ages. Notable city landmarks include the cathedral, bishop's palace and the Convento de San Vicente. Economically, the city is primarily dependent upon coal and iron mining, as well as food processing.
