Note: Sahagún was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Sain James, the patron sain of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. Various pilgrimage routes in the autonomous communities of Aragon, Navarre, and Castilla y León corresponded to old Roman roads built in the northern portion of the Iberian Peninsula. Sahagún offers various surviving historical monuments, many of them Mudéjar buildings. Some of the many historic sites include the Monastery of Santos Facundio and Primitivo and the churches of San Tirso and Santa Cruz.
