Note: Saint-Gilles-du-Gard was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. French pilgrimage routes to Compostela tend to follow old Roman roads, many of which continued to be utilized as primary roads of communication during the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages, Saint-Giles-du-Gard was an important location for people interested in power because of the defensibility it offered due to its elevated physical geographic situation. Furthermore, it was a strong developing port on the Petit Rhòne delta, an important point of embarkation for pilgrims sailing in direction to Jerusalem or Rome. Historic sites in Saint-Giles-du-Gard include the former Abbey-Church and Basilica of Saint Gilles du Gard, the Shrine of Saint Giles, the former Church of Saint Martin, and Romanesque House.
