Note: Small town infamous as the location of a Nazi concentration camp. In 1940, the Nazis first established a forced labor camp at Bełżec, where hundreds died due to starvation and disease. The labor camp closed in late 1940, and by 1942, the Nazis had established a concentration camp on the same grounds. Along with Treblinka and Sobibór, the camp at Bełżec was part of the Nazi plan to eliminate the Jewish population of Poland, and from 1942 to 1943, nearly half a million Jews were gassed at Bełżec, as well as an undetermined number of Poles and Roma (Gypsies). Mass graves were exhumed by forced Jewish laborers and the remains cremated, and the camp was demolished by late Spring of 1943. The Germans then disguised the area with a manor house and farm. Soviet forces overran the area in July 1944.
