Note: The German city of Hagen in the district of Arnsberg in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is located at the confluence of the Ennepe and Volme Rivers at the edge of the mountainous Sauerland region. Initially documented in the 8th century, it was a small agricultural village until the later medieval period when iron-ore mining and founding became important. Craftsmen in other fields were settled here from the 17th to the 18th century. Civil rights were granted to the townspeople in 1746. Hagen grew with the great industrial development of the 19th century, and absorbed three neighboring towns. Almost completely destroyed in World War II, it was rebuilt and is today a modern planned city with many parks and a museum of art and local history. Besides ironworking, economic activities include the making of steel, paper, chemicals, textiles, and machinery. The 2004 estimated population was 200,600. |
