Note: The northwestern German city of Mönchengladbach is located west of Düsseldorf in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The town developed around a Benedictine monastery founded in 972, and received its charter in 1336. For a few years between the World Wars it combined with two other towns, Rheydt and Odenkirchen to become Gladbach-Rheydt, but was split up again in 1933. In 1975 Mönchengladback absorbed Rheydt. The modern city retains much of its historic architecture, notably the 13th-century Romanesque cathedral, with a 10th-century crypt and a Gothic choir, a Romanesque parish church, a 12th-century-convent church, and the Baroque remodeling of 1663 of the former Benedictine abbey. There are several choral societies, and a local museum with a fine collection of Coptic textiles. There are also a botanical garden and several parks. The city is an educational center with the Duns Scotus Academy for philosophy and theology, colleges for agriculture and textile engineering, and a school of economics. Mönchengladbach has long been famed for textile production, and hosts the German Research Institute for textiles. Other products include paper, iron, machinery, chemicals, petroleum, and leather. It serves as a transportation center for rail, air, and highways. The city is the headquarters for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for north-central Europe. Its population estimate for 2004 was 263,300.
