Note: One of the main cities of ancient Apulia; Canusium was a center of the ancient Daunians, became allied to Rome in 318 BCE. It received municipal status in 88 BCE. Was important trade center; destroyed by Saracens 9th cen.; rebuilt by Normans 11th cen. and later part of Kingdom of Naples; noted for cathedral of San Sabino (1080 CE) and Roman ruins.
