Note: The city of Randers is in the eastern part of the Jutland Peninsula in Arhus county commune, located at mouth of the Gudenå River on Randers Fjord northwest of the city of Arhus. Its name appears in documents in 1086 and it received its charter in 1302. In medieval times it was important as a market and religious center. The Danish hero Niels Ebbesen assassinated the tyrant Count Gerhard of Holstein here in 1340. Damaged by fire in the 17th century, some of its historic buildings still survive, including St. Morten Church, built 1490, the Holy Ghost Monastery, build 1510, and several medieval merchants' houses. The city's economic activities include the manufacture railway rolling stock, beer, gloves, agricultural machinery, bacon, and dairy products. Its 2004 estimated population was 56,800. |
