Note: The city of Sliven is located at a strategic point at the entrance to passes in the eastern Balkan mountains in east-central Bulgaria, at the confluence of the Novoselska and Asenovska Rivers. Settled in Roman times, the medieval town was founded ca 1153. It was a center of conflict between Bulgaria and the Byzantine Empire, then between the Ottoman Empire and Russia in the 19th century. It has been known since the 19th century as a textile and craft center, and as a center of Bulgarian culture. The modern city boasts a theatre, library, museum, and orchestra. Its 1986 estimated population was 102,455.
