Note: Located in central Bulgaria. Archaeological investigation revealed remains of human settlement going back to the Stone-Copper Age. More than 500 burial mounds have been found in the vicinity, the most famous being the tomb of an unknown Thracian ruler lying on the outskirts of the town and featuring fine decorative murals. The ancient Thracian city of Seuthopolis, the predecessor to Kazanlak, founded by the Thracian King Seuth III at the end of the fourth century, has been excavated and preserved. Some ruins of the city are submerged. The surrounding area is famous for its roses, the basis for a thriving perfume industry from the 17th century. Local industries in the modern town include the manufacture of musical instruments, furniture, textiles, and foodstuffs. The 1991 estimated population was 65,200. |
