Note: The city of Burgas, located on an inlet of the Black Sea in southeastern Bulgaria, originated as a fishing village in the 17th century. After Bulgaria's liberation from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, the harbor was improved and the railroad extended here from Sofia. The city began to grow and develop and today is one of the nation's most important ports. The fourth largest city in Bulgaria, its 2003 estimated population was 192,000.
