Note: The city of Ulm in southwestern Germany is situated on the River Danube near its junction with the Blau and the Iller Rivers. Chartered as a free imperial city in the twelfth century, it thrived as medieval trading and textile manufacturing center, and was a member of the Protestant Schmalkaldic League in the Reformation. It declined during the religious wars of the 16 and 17th centuries. It went to Bavaria in 1802, then to Württemberg in 1810. By the mid-20th century, it had expanded as an industrial and commercial hub. Although it was severely damaged during World War II, it has rebuilt and restored much of its historic architecture, including the medieval city walls. Its large Gothic cathedral, the Münster, begun in 1377 and finished in 1890, boasts one of the tallest spires in the world at 528 feet. The city has diversified industries, and has a university founded in 1967. The 2004 estimated population was 119,900.
