Note: Seat of Tibetan rulers and the Tibetan Buddhist holy city, Lhasa has many temples, monasteries, and convents. The city was set along the "Ancient Tea and Horse Caravan Road," known as a secondary Silk Road. During the 20th century, many monastic institutions were closed by Chinese after the Tibetan revolt of 1959. The city was long closed to foreign visitors, though was opened to trade after the 1950s, and it is now an important tourist destination, with its Potala Palace designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. |
