Note: Ancient capital city of 13th century Sri Lanka, built on an outcropping of rock which was originally a cave monastery from the last centuries BCE. Excavations have exposed the city's defences, gateways to the outer city, as well as decorated steps to the king's palace and portions of the palace itself. The city was sacked by a Pandya general in the late 13th century, and later abandoned. |
