Note: Located on an estuary of the Krka River and the Adriatic Sea. The town grew up around St. Mihovil Castle. Venice and Hungary struggled to possess it until 1412. From 1797 to 1815, Šibenik was part of Napoleon's Illyrian Provinces, then later ruled by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was taken by Italy after WW I, later becoming part of Yugoslavia, and later independent Croatia. The Cathedral of St James in the city was built from 1431-1535, and was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
