Hierarchy of Papal States (former group of nations/states/cities)  Papal States (former group of nations/states/cities)

Note: Refers to the territories over which the Pope had sovereignty, generally referring to those held from 756 to 1870 in central Italy, but technically encompassing more lands and a longer historical period. The territories included territorial possessions of the papacy as well as land holdings donated to the bishops and the Church as endowments or gifts. The area was extensive by the 5th century, including sites all over the Italian peninsula, on the Mediterranean islands, in Gaul, the Balkans, and Africa. Territory was lost with the disintegration of the Holy Roman Empire. Frankish princes, especially Pepin the Short in the "Donation of Pepin," presented the pope with lands that formed the basis of the Papal States throughout the medieval and modern periods, though they were lost and returned by various monarchs through the centuries. The area was confined to Vatican City under Mussolini in 1929.
