Note: Six miles NE of modern Malatya; was important Hittite city and later an independent city-state; capital of Lesser Armenia in Roman times; Roman city of Melitene was a military headquarters during the reign of Justinian (6th century CE); became a metropolitan see in early Christian times; center for the Christian Jacobite sect; fell to the Seljuq sultanate of Rum in the 12th century; excavated by the French from 1932 on; bas-reliefs found are among the best surviving examples of Hittite art.
