Note: Noted for the nearby battle site where the Athenians and the Plataeans defeated the larger Persian army in the Persian Wars. According to legend, Pheidippes, a runner, was sent to announce the victory to Athens, and this distance then became the length of Marathon footrace. The distance was officially changed in later years to 26 miles, 385 yards. |
