Note: Medievel city of Îrān, with ruins covering a wide area south of Tehrān. The city is mentioned in a 5th century BCE inscription by Darius at Bistun, and ruins dating to the 3rd century BCE have been discovered. It was the royal residence during the Parthian dynasty (ca. 250 BCE-224 CE), an important stop on the ancient Silk Road, and a bishopric under the Sasanians (224-651 CE). By the 10th century, the city was flourishing as one of the most important in western Asia, in part due to their silk and ceramic production. The city was almost completely destroyed by the Mongols in 1220, with most of the original inhabitants moving to nearby Tehrān.
