Note: Qazvīn is a major city in the province of Zanjān which stands on the site of an ancient city built by Sasanian monarch Shapur II (reg 309-79 CE), possibly a replacement for another ancient city built by Shapur I (reg 241-72 CE). An important city along the Silk Road, it gradually grew in size as a frontier town until the 10th century, when it consisted of an inner and outer city with two mosques. In 1220, the Mongols destroyed the city, but by the mid-15th century it had established itself as the capital of the province under Tahmasp I (reg 1524-76). Abbas I (reg 1588-1629) changed the capital to Esfahan, but the city has remained an important trade center.
