Note: Settlement was founded during the 4th millennium BCE, on a site which had been already inhabited for some centuries. The city of Urkesh became an important political and religious center of the Hurrians, a nonsemetic people who appeared in northern Mesopotamia in the 3rd millenium BCE. The city was discovered under Tell Mozan in 1995.
