Note: Located on the Xiangkhoang Plateau in north-central Laos. The area is drained principally by the Ngum River, a southward-flowing tributary of the Mekong River. The plain is characterized by narrow river valleys and limestone and sandstone hills ranging from 3,000 to 3,600 feet in elevation. The plain's name is derived from hundreds of huge, ancient, carved stone jars. Traces of human remains have been found in the jars; they are believed to have been used in secondary burials, common in the Bronze and Iron Ages and still practiced in the region. The body would have been placed in the jar for months or years while the remains decomposed; then the bones would have been removed, cleaned and buried, or cremated. The area was a major battleground in the 1960s, when many jars were damaged or destroyed. |
