Note: Ancient site located near modern Qal‘at el Madhiq. Was one of 4 great cities founded in N Syria by Seleucus I Nicator (301-281 BCE); a citadel of the Seleucid kings; was the capital of Apamene. The fortress was destroyed by Pompey in 1st cen. CE, when the city was re-established under the name Claudia Apamea; destroyed in Moslem conquest 7th cen.
