Note: City in northern Armenia situated at the junction of the Pambak, Tandzut, and Vanadzoriget rivers. In the 19th century, the villages of Bolshoy and Maly Karaklis were merged, and subsequently named Karaklis. After Armenia became part of the Soviet Union, the town was renamed Kirovakan, after Sergey Kirov, the communist leader who was assassinated in 1934. In 1993, after independence from the Soviets, the name of the city was changed to Vanadzor. Its chief industries include the manufacturing of chemicals, textiles, and foodstuffs.
