Note: Founded in the 16th century as the capital of the captaincy when nearby Ciudad Vieja was destroyed. It thrived as one of the richest cities in the New World until destroyed by earthquakes in 1773, and the capital was moved to Guatemala City. In 1979 it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
