Note: Although the term is not often seen in modern usage, when used it typically refers to states north of the Mason-Dixon Line and the Ohio River, which separated the opposing forces in the Civil War. It generally does not include states west of the Missouri River, although it may include the top tier of states in the west, namely North Dakota, Montana, and Washington. |
