Note: Located at the confluence of the Gouwe and IJssel rivers in fertile polder district (reclaimed land). It was granted a charter in 1272, and was the center of medieval cloth trade. It was also noted for its clay pipes during the 17th and 18th centuries. Famous for Gouda cheese and weekly cheese market.
