Note: Khmer state that gained its independence from the preceding Funans. Territory divided into Upper and Lower ("Water") Chenla, and spanned present-day western Cambodia, southern Thailand, southern Vietnam, and southern Laos. Although still heavily influenced by India, the period saw the emergence of distinct Khmer qualities in art and politics. Rise of Angkor/Khmer empire led to the gradual decline of the Chenla.
