Note: Ancient maritime district in Asia Minor; it was settled early, ruled by Persia and Syria; annexed by Rome and later joined with Pamphylia to form province Lycia et Pamphylia in 43 CE; it later became its own province after the 4th century. Excavations at Xanthus, Patara, Myra, and other Lycian cities have revealed a distinctive type of funerary architecture.
