Note: Established in the mid-15th century, the Sultanate was a Muslim state that covered the Sulu Archipelago, which included parts of southwestern Philippines and northern Borneo. At its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Sultanate was a nexus for Asian and European trade.
