Note: City in eastern Uzbekistan, located in the western portion of the Fergana Valley. From the 10th century CE, the ancient town of Khavakend lay on the site of present-day Kokand, along the Silk Road trade route westward from China and India. Khavakend was destroyed in the Mongol invasion, but was rebuilt in 1732 from a pre-existing fort and became the capital of the khanate of Kokand. Under khan control, the city flourished as a religious and trade center. Rivalries between the Kokand and Bukharan khanates persisted, and both were unable to defeat the Russians, who captured the majority of the region by 1866. A Muslim government was established in Kokand in opposition to Russian rule, but it was suppressed in 1918. Major industries of Kokand are textiles, food and chemicals.
