Note: The nation's main island, named for 16th-century governor's thanks for surviving a shipwreck. "New" was added later to avoid confusion with the Honduran city of the same name. It was the site of British forts in 17th century. The economy is based on tourism and fishing, as well as rum exporting. New Providence is separate from the 32 districts of The Bahamas, and operates as its own business district, controlled by the central government.
