Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. The reservation spans 150 acres in the town of Mashpee and 170 acres in the city of Taunton; it lies within Bristol and Barnstable Counties, Massachusetts. Though the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe has inhabited present-day Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island for more than 12,000 years, it was not granted federally-recognized trust lands until November 10, 2015. The Tribe's success in securing federal lands followed decades of legal battles with developers, private landowners, and the federal government. During his presidency, Donald Trump threatened to revoke the Tribe's reservation status in 2018. However, pursuant to a 2020 court ruling, Trump's attempts to disenfranchize the Tribe of its reservation lands were deemed unconstitutional. Currently, the tribe's reservation status is mantained, but continues to be threatened. |
