Note: Located near the Grijalva River; present day town occupies the same site as the original prehistoric site favored for its fertile soil; earthen mounds and plazas established here ca. 700 CE; Chiapanec warriors defeated by the Spanish in 1524. The Spanish population largely moved to milder climate of San Cristóbal de las Casas, leaving the original site to indigenous peoples. Site contains hieroglyphic inscriptions.
