Note: On November 13, 1620, Canatlán was founded with the name San Diego de Canatlń. It became part of the state of Durango in 1824. Canatlán is declared a free municipality in 1917. In 1959 Canatlán was officially named Canatlán de las Manzanas, but the name was soon changed to simply Canatlán because of confusion with another location by the same name.
