Note: Donegal is Ireland's northernmost county, lying west of Northern Ireland and with the Atlantic Ocean on its northern and western borders. The coastline is rough, with many inlets, and the total area measures 1865 square miles. The Erne and the Foyle are the principal rivers. It was once the remote and ancient kingdom of Tyrconnell, founded in 400 CE and ruled by the O'Donnells until the defeat of Ireland as a whole by the English in 1603. In modern times most of the population is centered on coast and in river valleys. The valleys contain most of the arable land and cattle, sheep, pigs, oats, and potatoes are raised there. Salmon fishing is done in most rivers of any size, and tourism is a major economic activity, due to the many beaches and golf courses, and the beautiful rugged scenery. Industries include the manufacture of synthetic fibers, clothing, and carpets. Handmade woolens and tweed are also produced. The people of western Donegal have retained to a large extent the native Irish Gaelic language. The county seat is the village of Lifford. The 2003 estimated population was 138,600.
