Note: The county of Cavan in the province of Ulster in the Republic of Ireland cover some 730 square miles, consisting of valleys, uplands, peat bog, pastureland, drumlins, lakes, and rivers. Its Irish name An Cabhán means "The Hollow Place." The area included in modern Cavan was once the eastern part of the kingdom of Bréifne, ruled by the O'Reilly clan. It fought off the Anglo-Norman and English invaders until the late 16th century, but was colonized by English and Scots from 1603. About three-quarters of the people live in rural areas, farming hay and crops and pasturing livestock, mostly dairy cattle. The towns have industries such as dairies and other food processing, the manufacture of plastics, synthetic fibers, and wallpaper. The 2003 estimated population was 57,000.
