Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, also called the Ioway or Báxoje. The reservation spans over 12,000 acres of non-contiguous lands straddling the eastern borders of Kansas and Nebraska. Specifically, it is located along the confluence of the Big Nemaha and Missouri Rivers in Brown and Doniphan Counties, Kansas and Richardson County, Nebraska. Approximately 6,000 acres of the reservation are independently controlled by the Tribe itself, while the rest of the reservation's acreage is held in federal trust. The reservation was first established in 1836 by the signing of the Platte Purchase Treaty, which moved the Tribe to the reservation lands, then considered Indian Country, in 1837. Its current boundaries were solidified in accordance with the Treaty of March 6, 1861. Prior to the establishment of the reservation's current borders, the territories of Kansas and Nebraska were created pursuant to the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which split both the reservation and the tribe. |
