Note: Empire in northeastern Anatolia. It was one of the three successor states to emerge after the Latin crusaders' conquest of Constantinople in 1204, the empire of Nicaea and the despotate of Epirus being the other two. The empire was founded by two members of the former imperial Comnenus family, David and his brother Alexius I (reigned 1204-1222) of Trebizond. The empire comprised the entire southern coastal region of the Black Sea except the westernmost section belonging to Nicaea. Trebizond, the capital, and Sinope were the main cities. The empire reached its greatest prosperity under Alexius II (1297-1330). It was conquered by the Turks in 1461 and the territory was annexed to the Ottoman Empire. At the height of its power and wealth, the court of the Comnenus dynasty was a great artistic and cultural center, making Trebizond one of the last refuges of Hellenistic civilization.
