Note: Sultanate founded by a Shiraz prince and based on Kilwa Kisiwani. It emerged as one of the most important trading sites in the Indian Ocean region, due to its geographical position and its control of trade, particularly that of gold at the port of Sofala. In the 16th century Kilwa came under Portuguese control.
